Following the release of the world's smallest and lightest full HD camcorder, Sanyo is now announcing the same performance, but this time with a 720p camera, the new Xacti DMX-HD700.

An upgrade of the VPC-HD2, the new Xacti boasts the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 compression method, which allows for more footage to be stored while at the same time requiring less power.

Sensor wise, the unit is fitted with a 1/2.5 inch CCD with approximately 7.38 megapixels. However, for video recording only 4 megapixels are employed. The full resolution is only used for still images.

The DMX-HD700 is also equipped with a 5x optical zoom lens having a focal distance ranging from 6.3 to 31.7 mm (in 35mm terms, this means 38 to 190mm) and a maximum aperture of f/3.5 wide to f/4.7 at the tele end. It also comes with a built-in neutral density filter, which allows you to shoot at fast apertures when you just have too much light.

The HD700 uses the same new optical processing engine found in the previously announced DMX-HD1000, which benefits from the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 compression method.

In the photography department, the unit looks like it's able to do a good job, although one should not expect spectacular results. The 7.1 MP resolution is backed up by sensitivities of up to ISO 3200 and by the "eFace Chaser Function" that tracks up to 12 faces and ensures that they are in focus and properly exposed.

In terms of storage, an 8Gb SDHC memory card will be enough for close to two hours of HD SHQ (super high quality) video footage or five hours of TV SHQ material.

The Xacti DMX-HD700 comes bundled with Adobe System's Adobe Premier Elements 3.0 and Photoshop Album SE, easing the tasks of editing and archiving your content.

Sanyo's new camcorder will be available starting October 19, 2007 and will retail for around $600.
