LSI has outdone itself with the latest controller series

SandForce made sure to establish itself as the premier brand of solid-state drive controller chips early on, so, naturally, Kingston always makes sure to use the newest and best ICs whenever they come out, like now.

SandForce was an independent brand at first, but eventually was acquired by LSI. That only seemed to spur it on though.

So now we're looking at the SandForce 3700 controller series, or rather a solid-state drive line from Kingston that is based on the SF 3700 line.

The collection probably bears a name involving the “HyperX” brand somehow, and is made of a whole bunch of different drives, with varying capacities and form factors.

Most of the Kingston products are SATA-Express drives, best suited for laptops and 2-in-1 devices (tablet/laptop hybrids).

There are even smaller ones though, NGFF (next generation form factor), which are much tinier but still have room for a few hundred gigabytes.

The controller also has pins for PCI Express 2.0 x4 interfaces, not just SATA 6.0 Gbps (or SATA III as it is otherwise known).

Thus, the transfer speeds can go all the way up to 1,800 MB/s. That's a whole lot, and it will be possible only over PCIe.

And raw speed isn't the only benefit brought by the new controllers. SandForce 3700 also possess Redundant Array of Independent Silicon Elements technology (RAISE) and dual AES-256 encryption, plus Optimized DuraWrite Data Reduction (boosts SSD endurance) and SHIELD error correction (extends flash memory life and enhances data integrity via flash-optimized low-density parity-check /LDPC).

Unfortunately, Kingston did not provide a list of capacities, nor did it state an ETA (estimated time of arrival). Not all that shocking, given the lack of even a product series name. Maybe we'll learn more over the next few weeks, or at least see some other such SSDs come forth.
