A few interesting additions to the company's Ultra II line

Every major name in the industry (well, at least from those segments related to digital photography) is making some sort of announcement nowadays, as they can't simply leave PMA2008 go by without taking advantage of this golden marketing opportunity. And one of the latest to join this announcement frenzy is SanDisk, who has just unveiled a very serious upgrade to its line of SDHC memory cards, namely some hot new 32 and 16 GB SDHC models, as well as an 8GB SDHC Plus version.

"As cameras offer more megapixels and as new high-definition 'record-to-memory-card' camcorders are being introduced, the image sizes and files get bigger, requiring higher card capacity," said Susan Park, senior product marketing manager for SanDisk Ultra II cards.

However, as mentioned right from the title, the new memory cards from SanDisk are not all about size, but they're also pretty speedy. Thus, the cards offer faster read and write speeds of 15 megabytes per second (15MB/sec), up from previous speeds of 10MB/sec read and 9MB/sec write in the SanDisk Ultra II line.

"Cameras also are increasingly used for recording video clips, which demand even more memory and capacity. These mega-capacities in our SanDisk Ultra II line give users the worry-free ability to capture thousands of their memories and hours of HiDef video on a single card, while the faster write speed can reduce the time between shots and the faster read speed reduces time spent waiting to copy those images to a computer," Mrs. Park added.

Every announcement made today has at least one rather unique aspect. For example, the 32GB Ultra II SDHC card is touted by SanDisk to be the highest capacity consumer flash memory card (it will be able to store more than 8,000 high-resolution pictures or up to 40 hours of video) in the manufacturer's lineup.

On the other hand, the 8GB SanDisk Ultra II SDHC Plus offers both SD and USB functionality in one card. Designed with SanDisk's Hinge Lock technology, the card may be inserted into a USB port on any computer. The two-in-one SD-plus-USB feature eliminates the need to carry cables or card readers to transfer photos and videos from cameras

The 32GB SanDisk Ultra II SDHC card is slated to hit the shelves at some point in April at a MSRP of around 350 US dollars (with a MicroMate USB 2.0 Reader included in the price). Both the 16GB Ultra II SDHC and the 8GB Ultra II SDHC Plus cards will arrive at some point in March and will retail for around $179.99 and $99.99, respectively.
