A few days back, a baby giraffe was born at the San Francisco Zoo. Staff at this animal sanctuary say that both the baby giraffe and its mother find themselves in perfectly good health, but that visitors will only be allowed to see them in a few weeks.

They say that the two animals need to spend some time in isolation in order to bond with each other.

What's more, it would be unwise to make the baby giraffe strut around in front of an audience before it can even properly control its limbs.

Huffington Post quotes zoo employee Jim Nappi, who said that, “We are very excited about this birth.”

“Giraffes add a special majesty to our multi-species African Savanna exhibit. Their successful breeding means that our zoo-wide Wellness Initiative is working as it should be; and when the animals are thriving, we are happy,” Jim Nappi further added.

When born, the baby giraffe weighed an impressive 130 pounds (about 60 kilograms) and was almost 6 feet (1.82 meters) tall.
