South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung is expected to come to the market with its first handset powered by a 2GHz application processor sometime next year, the latest reports on the matter suggest.

Following the release of 1Ghz phones, and of new devices that pack dual-core 1.2GHz processors, the company is reportedly well on track to make a great step forward in delivering enhanced performance levels to its mobile users.

The company has just released the Samsung Galaxy S II, which includes a dual-core 1.2Ghz CPU, and is already working on the release of a 2GHz smartphone, it seems.

Recent reports on the matter suggest that an unnamed “high-ranking” executive confirmed that Samsung will be able to “release a 2Ghz dual core CPU-equipped smartphone by next year.”

Moreover, rumor has it that the said device would be capable of delivering “data processing capacities of a regular PC.”

Whether it would be only one such phone, or more of them, it remains to be seen.

For the time being, however, the only thing that is known on the said application processor is that it might be included in the company's Exynos series of mobile CPUs.

Another interesting piece of info on this would be the fact that Samsung might plan on selling the chips to other mobile manufacturers as well.

Undoubtedly, the launch of a 2GHz smartphone would appeal a lot to enthusiasts, though it remains to be seen how well would the battery inside the handset handle the extra speed.

It also remains to be seen how well would the processor fare when compared to currently existing dual-core mobile CPUs, as well as with the upcoming quad-core chips for mobile devices.

Overall, it seems that next generation smartphones would indeed offer performance levels that would put them on the same line with laptops and netbooks. Keep an eye on this space for updates on the matter.
