Samsung AP business isn’t doing so well, but the company has big plans

Samsung is not only looking to increase its presence in the smartphone and tablet market, but according to recent reports, the tech giant plans to expand its AP (Application Processor) domination, as well.

Samsung launched its own AP, the Exynos, in an attempt to deal with supply issues and boost profits, but it hasn't been a smooth ride in gaining momentum in the AP market.

Qualcomm chips are becoming more and more widespread due to increasingly lowered prices, so Sammy has to do something about it too.

According to industry sources coming to us from the direction of ZDNet, Samsung has experienced an increase in AP shipments this month, compared to a year ago. Paradoxically, the company’s profit in 2013 was cut in half, compared to 2012.

A Samsung official confirmed the information, but wouldn't provide any actual numbers. Nevertheless, we’re not far from the truth if we speculate the Exynos business might be in need of some revitalizing. The key do doing so?

Samsung hopes to ship more and more Exynos tablets this year. After all, Sammy did bundle three of its new tablet models (which were uncovered at CES) with its own processors and the Korean tech giant hopes to take the market by storm with these offerings.

On top of that, sources note that drawing in new clients for its application processor business is one of Samsung’s main priorities for this year.

The company isn't surely done with launching tablets in 2014. As MWC 2014 draws closer, we can’t deny the possibility that Samsung’s long-time rumored AMOLED screen tablets will make an appearance. And they might even be powered by the Exynos platform.

It should be quite interesting to see whether this year Exynos manages to become a Real Player in the AP market and provide some real competition to Qualcomm.
