It will have to contend with Canon, HP, Epson and Brothers for the spot

Right now, Samsung is the fifth largest provider of printers in the world, after HP, Canon, Epson and Brother. However, it has a plan.

And that plan is to rise through the ranks very fast over the next six years, so fast that it will snatch away the top position by 2015.

Samsung says it can accomplish this because it is the only one that can provide a seamless digitization workflow.

Which is to say, users can produce content, send it to devices, view it on a TV or tablet, and even scan or print it.

This immediately begs the question of why Samsung isn't in any stronger position already, if it is supposed to be such an essential asset.

As it stands, Samsung accounts for only 5% of global printer sales, while HP is at the top end of the spectrum with 40%.

Going from 5% to nearly 50% is a tall order. Nevertheless, Samsung says it can do it by 2020, and we can't really do anything but wait and see how everything goes.

In a way, it doesn't really have many other avenues to push forward on. Its TV, PC and consumer electronics businesses are in a stalemate with competitors at the moment, so printers, in a way, are the only flexible field left.
