Samsung Electronics America has announced its newest ultra-mobile PC (in short you can call it UMPC). The Q1P SSD is the first portable ever to come equipped with a NAND flash-based solid state drive (SSD). The company will showcase the Q1P SSD UMPC, along with its predecessors (Q1 and Q1P) at CES, so if you're an SSD fan, this is the place to go.

The 32GB SSD has some obvious advantages when compared to the traditional 1.8" hard drive found in the Q1 models. Samsung says that boot time is 25-50% faster when using the SSD and that it has also boosted the reading and writing times (53 MB/s and 28MB/s). Seek time is almost non-existent since flash devices don't have moving parts. Furthermore, Samsung claims that battery time has also improved. The latest Samsung UMPC with an integrated 32GD SSD sells with a price tag of $1,299 and has the following specifications:

CPU : Intel Pentium M ULV 1.0GHz OS : Windows XP Chipset : Intel i915GMS Graphics : GMA 900 DVMT 128M Memory : 1GB DDR2-533 Display : 7-inch WVGA touch screen (280 nits) Audio : Two stereo speakers, H/P out, array microphone and SRS sound Storage : 32GB SSD Communication: 802.11b/g,10/100 Base-TX Ethernet Bluetooth v2.0 I/O: Two USB 2.0,one Type II CF card, H/P jack, VGA, DC-In Battery : Li-Ion Standard 3 cell (up to 3 hrs.) Dimension/weight : 9.0?5.5?1.0 inches (1.7lbs)

At the time it will enter mass production the UMPC might lose a bit of its initial price and should sell for $999. But as Sandisk also announced SSD drives, when the UMPC will hit the stores, it might already have competition.
