Samsung issues an official answer addressed to Square Trade

On Friday, we told you that Square Trade tried to replicate the infamous #bendgate test by bringing the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and HTC One M9 into the equation, alongside the iPhone 6 Plus, which was the initiator of the scandal.

The tests showed that the new Galaxy S6 Edge tends to bend under the same amount of weight (110 lbs / 49kg) as the iPhone 6 Plus. More than that, one of the curved displays on the side cracked during this straining processor.

We were also shown that it took up to 149 lbs / 67 kg to completely break Samsung’s new gizmo, while the Apple iPhone 6 Plus proved to be more rugged and capable of bearing 179 lbs / 81 kg.

Well, it appears Samsung didn't take too kindly to these test results and felt compelled to issue an official statement accompanied by a video on the whole #bendgate affair.

At the beginning, the Korean tech giant clearly states:

“This video was not produced to satisfy sadistic desires by attempting to destroy phones, but to show how Samsung’s mobile devices are designed and tested to endure physical stress - even in extreme situations.”

Samsung attempts to put some perspective on the whole #bendgate thing

Samsung makes a point of highlighting the fact that 110 lbs / 49 kg will rarely fall on a smartphone, and in a normal “backpocket against the bench” setup, the maximum pressure should be around 66 lbs / 29 kg (but doesn't the person’s weight factor into the equation?)

Samsung goes on to reveal that the S6 and S6 Edge have been tested to successfully endure the pressure of 79 lbs / 35 kg (approximately the same is needed to break a stack of 2B pencils).

It’s also important to point out that Samsung says the phone has different kinds of durability on the front and back, an aspect which Square Trade skipped over.

The company also claims it will deliver this statement to Square Trade and will request another video to be made, this time showing the phone’s durability on both sides.

It’s unclear whether we’re actually going to see the second video being made, but while we wait on that, we can take a look at Sammy stress-testing its Galaxy S6 Edge below.
