Broadcom, one of the global leaders in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, has recently announced that Samsung, one of the major consumer electronics makers, selected the company's third generation of Blu-ray chipset solution to integrate in Samsung's upcoming lineup of Blu-ray Disc players and home theater systems. Build on the 65nm process technology, the new chipset will be featured in Samsung's still unnamed Blu-ray player line, which the consumer electronics company will reportedly showcase at the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show. The solution is said to provide all the processing functionality to enable playback of the Blu-ray optical disc.

Speaking of which, the BCM7601 has just been introduced by the semiconductors maker as a Blu-ray decoded solution that builds on the company's successful BCM7440 system-on-chip (SoC) solution. Coincidently, this one too was featured on Samsung's 2008 Blu-ray Disc players.

“We are very pleased that Samsung has selected our newest Blu-ray chipset solution for its 2009 designs,” said Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom's Consumer Electronics line of business, Dan Eiref. “This is an exciting growth phase in the Blu-ray market and we are pleased to partner with Samsung to introduce a new lineup of players and home theater systems for 2009 with such advanced features as BD Live and Netflix instant streaming.”

The BCM7601 delivers full support for HDMI 1.3 standard, and comes with enhanced video quality features such as 12-bit/162MHz video DACs (digital to analog converters), a full 12-bit video pipeline, and full high definition motion adaptive de-interlacing support for 1080p/60 native output. Also, the new chipset comes to provide connectivity support for Ethernet, USB 2.0, and Serial ATA (SATA) and HDMI interfaces.

In addition to the BCM7601, Broadcom has also announced the BCM7620, a new single-chip optical front-end solution that incorporates advanced digital signal processing techniques to provide high levels of playability, compatibility and performance for all optical media.
