Samsung isn't about to lag behind in the Ultrabook race, slow though it is, and its latest product release proves it.

It looks like Samsung just launched two of those super-thin, super-light but also super-expensive computers called Ultrabooks.

Granted, super expensive may be a bit much, but not overly, since anything with a price of over $1,000 (749 Euro) qualifies as outside the financial means of most people.

More specifically, the Series 5 Ultrabooks that Samsung just released in South Korea are priced at 1,290,000 won ($1,125 / 845.50 Euro) to 1,490,000 won ($1,298 / 972 Euro) for a 13-inch and 1,340,000 won ($1,167 / 874 Euro) to 1,540,000 won ($1,341 / 1,079 Euro) for a 14-inch model.

That said, the laptops try to follow the guidelines that Intel imposed to the best of their abilities, while still packing as much horsepower as possible for whatever users throw at them.

The 13-inch Series 5 measure 14.9mm in thickness, has a weight of 1.4 kilograms and relies on an Intel Core i5 CPU (central processing unit).

It combined a 500 GB HDD (hard disk drive) with a 16 GB SSD (solid state drive) and sticks to Integrated graphics.

It features USB, Ethernet, VGA and HDMI ports as well, plus WiFi, while an anti-reflective coating covers the HD display (1,366 x 768 pixels).

Meanwhile, the 14-inch Ultrabooks measure 20.9mm, weighs 1.8 kilograms and pairs a 1 TB HDD with a 16 GB SSD.

It has an ODD (optical disk drive) too, plus the AMD HD 7750M graphics and USB/Ethernet/WiFi/HDMI connectors.

Finally, the notebooks use aluminum cases, the Fast Start technology (makes them recover from sleep mode in under 2 seconds) and will start shipping for the aforementioned prices (justified by the option to choose a 128 GB SSD instead of the HDD) by the end of December, 2011 (this month).
