It’s a common fact that Samsung was the first mobile phone maker to ever release an 8-megapixel camera phone, the Innov8, which came to the market one month before Sony Ericsson launched its C905 handset. For what it is worth, it seems that the company will soon become the first manufacturer to unveil a 12-megapixel camera phone as well.

According to the latest news on the web, the Korean cell phone maker is preparing to announce a 12MP beast at the Mobile World Congress in about two weeks from now in Barcelona, Spain. There are no specifications on the device available at the moment, but word is that the company should start mass producing the device by the end of the month. Moreover, it appears that Europe will be the first region to see the phone at large.

From what we've heard, the new Samsung phone won't have optical zoom, yet all the other features that we are accustomed to see in its handsets are expected to be there. For the time being, we can only wait for more info on the device to surface, for it is still uncertain whether it will be a smartphone or only a feature phone, or whether it will run a touchscreen or only a regular display.

One thing that has been speculated is that the 12MP phone won't be running under Symbian, although the Korean maker is also expected to announce an 8-megapixel camera phone at MWC, one that would sport the platform in question. This handset should come as the direct successor of the Samsung INNOV8, and it could hit the market as soon as March.

MWC is only two weeks away, and we can keep our fingers crossed until then, because having a 12-megapixel handset on the loose would surely be a great thing. Stay tuned to learn more info as soon as it is available.
