U3 comes in 1, 2, and 4 GB capacities

Samsung entered the DAP (Digital Audio Player) market back in 2005 by releasing the YP-U1. They're now unveiling their third incarnation of their miniDAP.

The new Samsung U3 has what the U2 was definitely longing for: a retracting USB port. Now, all Samsung has to do is work for a more competitive U4 that should have a A2DP Bluetooth (my dreams, of course, not necessarily their purpose). It's clearly going after the iPod Shuffle prospects, but unless it's going to be really cheap, I can't see it performing very well.

U3 comes in an elongated form and keeps the irritating and useless blue lighting atop the USB cap. There is still some good news though. It comes in 1GB, 2 GB and 4 GB capacities and supports MP3, WMA and the OGG format music files. The chief ingredient is the RDS FM radio. Other features include a built-in USB plug (not surprisingly).

All in all, the new YP-U3 from Samsung is surely targeted at the alpha pups, kids who would fall for its stylish color or the blue light at the top and not for the ?unique qualities of the U3".

Here are some specs:

- capacity: 1, 2, and 4 GB - 1" black and white OLED display - RDS tuner - 15 hours of battery life - Dimensions: 25.4 x 80 x 11 mm

Samsung said that the YP-U3 will be available in the UK in 2 months. Hopefully, the player will make it to the US too. No price details have been revealed.
