Samsung, the South Korean electronics manufacturer, revealed its first mobile phone to incorporate AM-OLED technology, the W2400 Special Edition, equipped with an SDI 2.2 inch screen. According to Samsung officials, only 1,000 units of the W2400 Special Edition are made available as of November 30, so those who want to own the handset should hurry up and buy it.

Displays using the AM-OLED (active-matrix organic light emitting diode) technology, also known as "dream displays", do not need as much back-lighting as the LCD ones, because they are self-luminous. This leads to a reduction of about 40 percent when it comes to consumed power, which is a more than welcomed advantage for any device. Also, the AM-OLED screen proves to be great for applications that require high video features, like various games and TV streaming.

DisplaySearch, a US-based analyst firm, predicts that the AM-OLED market will increase to about 130 million units by 2011 and will reach $5.58 billion in the same year, from the $220.5 million in 2007. This would be no surprise, as the AM-OLED technology is clearly one that has a lot of advantages.

Being the AM-OLED version of Samsung SPH-W2400, the W2400 Special Edition comes with many multimedia features: it is 3.5G compatible, it supports Bluetooth and T-DMB connectivity and packs a 2 Megapixel camera, built-in MP3 player and TV-out. A quite nice multimedia phone.

LG, the other electronic giant from South Korea, will soon release a phone with the AM-OLED technology too, so Samsung should expect serious competition in this sector. But until LG's release, consumers desiring a handset with AM-OLED display can acquire the Samsung W2400 Special Edition at a price of 599,000 South Korean wons, the equivalent of about 650 US dollars.
