It appears that Samsung may soon get around to releasing its newest display technology for handsets and smartphones, and this once it won't be any sort of variation of the AMOLED panel.

As consumers probably know, Samsung Mobile Display has been so successful on the mobile market, at least for the most part, because of its AMOLED display technology.

Since these sort of panels started to sell, liquid crystal displays (LCD) slowly waned in terms of shipment percentage.

Still, the company has definitely not been slack in this segment either, and while sales of small form factor LCDs haven't been overly high, they may soon rise again, provided a certain milestone proves as profitable as expected.

Basically, though they haven't been the major part of Samsung's market performance, LCDs have been the subject of research.

Now, it appears that said research is about to pay off in the form of a new type of panel, superior to IPS LCD.

The display go by the name of Super PLS, which is short for Plane to Line Switching,

No doubt one of the major assets is that Super PLS are about 15% cheaper to make than their predecessors.

This advantage is only amplified by the fact that the they also feature better viewing angles, improved by 10% in fact.

The newcomers aren't exactly ready to be incorporated in actual products, but it won't be long before Samsung finished up the final touches and preparations.

Once that happens, it will be interesting to see just how the share of AMOLED and LCD starts shifting, at least as far as Samsung's shipments are concerned.

Mass production will commence during the first quarter of 2011, which is not that far off. Meanwhile, the press release that Samsung issued with the purpose of announcing this advancement can be found here.
