The company patented the device, which doesn't have an actual frame

So far, when it came to augmented reality headsets and glasses, or monocles, most of them, if not all, used something like standard glasses frames, which went around and over both ears.

Samsung is planning to depart from that convention, if its latest patent is any indication.

The company has filed an application for a heads-up display that comes with an integrated earpiece.

It is the earpiece that acts as support for the whole thing, which means that the device will probably be very light, otherwise it would be uncomfortable to hang the whole weight on a single ear.

Other than that, the patent looks like any other augmented reality eyewear set, and the total lack of further information in the filing doesn't help matters.

It does seem like the contraption will have a collapsible earpiece, if nothing else. Maybe Samsung will create something that will sell along a future smartphone, or an alternative to the Gear 2 and Gear Fit smartwatch/smartband.

Either way, it's clear that Samsung is preparing for the inevitable face-off with Google Glass and all other techno eyepieces out there. Whether or not it does well in a direct confrontation with them remains to be seen.
