With Windows Mobile 6.1 on board

Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless has just announced the launch of an entire series of new mobile phones, including one running under Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system, the HTC Imagio, and it seems that it might come to the market with other nice devices during this month, including a Windows Mobile 6.1-powered Samsung Omnia II.

According to a recent article on WMExperts, the upcoming Samsung Omnia II is set to make an appearance on Big Red's lineup with the older version of Microsoft's mobile operating system, although the WM 6.5 flavor of the platform will become available on the market on October 6, and will reach Verizon on HTC Imagio (Whitestone).

It sounds like a great surprise that Verizon and Samsung will make the Omnia II available with WM 6.1, especially since the South Korean phone manufacturer already officially announced that the device would be upgraded to Windows Mobile 6.5. However, WMExperts notes that ROM update will come to the handset later on after the initial release on Big Red's airwaves so as to make the WM 6.5 OS available for its owners too.

The news site also says the following: We're hearing from our source: - Verizon is waiting for Samsung to officially launch it first. - Verizon is looking to launch sometime in mid-October. - It will launch on Verizon with Windows Mobile 6.1. - The Omnia II is launching elsewhere with Windows Mobile 6.5.

Hopefully, this will be one rumor to prove false in the end. The Samsung Omnia II seems like a great device, and the Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system might make it look even more appealing when available on it. As another WM-based mobile phone on Verizon will also receive the 6.5 blessing, namely the HTC Touch Pro2, the release of Omnia II with 6.1 on board would just not make any sense. However, we should be looking out for the official announcement to learn how things will actually be.
