Last year, Samsung unveiled to the world their first handsets running under the new Windows Phone 7 operating system from Microsoft, and the Samsung Omnia 7 was one of them, a device that might soon see a successor, as the latest reports on the matter suggest.

A mobile phone sporting the model number of Samsung SGH-i708 has just received the necessary approvals from the Federal Communications Commission.

Apparently, the new handset is nothing more than a revamped Samsung Omnia 7 device, one that adds a front-facing camera into the mix.

The images that FCC made public show a device that closely resembles the Samsung Omnia 7, but there are certain elements that point at the fact that this is a new smartphone.

For example, there is the aforementioned front-facing webcam that can be seen on the left side of the handset's top. Moreover, the new device comes with a different bottom, the guys over at Pocketnow note.

The mobile phone sports the old Windows Phone logo as well though the final device will certainly arrive on shelves with the new one on it.

The new device will arrive on shelves with the latest flavor of Windows Phone on board, namely Mango, which was already made official with a wide range of enhancements when compared to the previous release of the OS.

The new platform flavor will bring along support for front-facing cameras on mobile phones, and it seems that the successor of Omnia 7 will be one of the devices to sport the feature.

Samsung is one of the mobile phone makers that confirmed plans to release Mango handsets this year, but the company has yet to make any official announcement on the devices that it will bring to shelves with the new platform on board.

The first Windows Phone Mango handsets are already official, and Samsung, along with other Microsoft partners, might announce their new phones in the next few weeks, so stay tuned.
