xchange magazine announced on Wednesday that Samsung Mobile had just received the Best of 4G Award for its Samsung Mondi handset that was included in the Mobile Internet Device category. The magazine also stated that the awards were meant to show which were the leaders in the development, deployment and service when it came to the 4G technology.

The mobile phone maker received the award at the 4G World conference and expo in Chicago. “xchange is pleased to honor Samsung Mobile’s contributions to the development and advancement of 4G technology and services,” said Mike Saxby, group publisher of xchange. “The growth in the 4G arena has been incredible, as shown by Samsung Mobile’s achievement.” Both the xchange and 4G World Web sites will display Samsung Mobile and the handset.

What the Samsung Mondi can deliver to users includes enhanced download and upload speeds, which can rise to up to double the speeds that are delivered by mobile phones available today on the existing 3G networks. The device is based on the WiMAX technology, which is becoming increasingly available in different areas of the world. At the same time, the device also includes Wi-Fi capabilities, which help it deliver the same experience even when outside the WiMAX coverage area.

Other specs of the Samsung Mondi also include a sliding QWERTY keypad, a wide range of multimedia features that deliver access to email, Internet browsing and video content, as well as business applications for those who need them. Services like Fring, Gypsii and Windows Live Messenger are also available with it, not to mention the array of Windows Mobile apps that can be downloaded to it. A GPS receiver has also been included in the package, as well as a 4.3-inch touch screen, and the Opera 9.5 web browser.

“The innovation and effort that have been demonstrated by Samsung Mobile reflect the type of leadership that continues to drive opportunity and benefits throughout the emerging 4G industry,” said Eliot Weinman, conference chair and president, Events Division of Yankee Group. “We extend our sincere congratulations to Samsung Mobile on behalf of the entire industry.”
