Samsung Electronics, the second largest mobile phone maker in the world, has just announced the launch of its own operating system for smartphones, called Samsung bada. According to the company, the new OS will arrive on the market in December, and is aimed at offering developers the possibility to come up with applications for its new mobile phones, while delivering a fun and diverse mobile experience to users.

The new platform from Samsung is expected to offer a variety of mobile applications and content, while its name, which means “ocean” in Korean, suggests that an infinite number of applications can be creased for the OS. Moreover, the name “bada” also suggests that Samsung is committed to the variety of open platforms available in the industry.

“By opening Samsung's mobile platforms we will be able to provide rich mobile experiences on an increasing number of accessible smartphones,” Dr Hosoo Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Media Solution Center at Samsung Electronics, stated. “bada will be Samsung's landmark, iconic new platform that brings an unprecedented opportunity for operators, developers and Samsung mobile phone users around the world,” he added.

The new operating system has been built on Samsung's experience in the mobile phone industry, and the previously released proprietary platforms from the company. The OS offers simple usage to developers, the company states, underlining that bada was aimed at proving the most developer-friendly platform in the world, especially when it comes to the web services-based applications. In addition, the maker also notes that bada's User Interface (UI) can be turned into an attractive UI design for developers.

The OS has been added to Samsung's mobile application ecosystem, which was established through the launch of Samsung Mobile Innovator in 2008 and of the Samsung Application Seller Site followed by Samsung Application Store. The adoption of the new OS will deliver to users various applications on a mobile phone, while mobile operators will be able to deliver unique and differentiated services for subscribers, the company noted. Samsung launched today the official website for the OS, with a large amount of details on the fresh OS, and plans on delivering the bada software development kit (SDK) to developers in December.
