And 50% lower power consumption

Samsung has been quite busy lately, as it has announced or launched some new products in almost all of the specific areas of the consumer electronics market the company's involved in. However, none of the previous announcements compared to this one, as yesterday, the Korean company launched what could be considered the most advanced LCD TV display on the market, the 70-inch Full-HD (1080p capable) LCD TV with Local Dimming Technology.

Unlike Samsung's previous models, which used cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) for backlighting, the new model relies on light-emitting diodes (or LEDs) to carry out this task. And of course, we're not talking about just a handful of LEDs, but about several hundred light sources of this type.

Moreover, the new TV incorporates what Samsung calls "local-dimming technology", which means that the lit parts of the on-screen image can be brightened to the maximum while all light is shut off in the dark areas of the screen. The result? First of all, the whopping 500,000:1 contrast ratio mentioned earlier, but also a serious reduction in the power consumption level (up to 50% less power, compared to other LCD TV models).

The new "monster" LCD from Samsung also incorporates LED scanning technology, which means that the LEDs are shut off in sequence at very high speeds, artificially eliminating the flicker and ghosting problems associated with large-screen LCD TVs.

Quite obviously, the Korean company has also taken into consideration the aesthetic aspect when designing this device. The 70-incher sports a high-gloss, "piano black" (as Samsung calls it) bezel and titanium chrome trim, which make it look quite classy and sophisticated. Moreover, it offers high-quality audio as well, since the manufacturers have also thrown in the mix dual hidden speakers and a rear woofer for a high quality audio experience.

There's no info regarding just how much this thing will cost (although I'm pretty sure it won't be exactly cheap), but we'll find out that later, as Samsung has announced that it will retail it in Korea starting with the second half of 2007.
