Now that technology has reached a stage where performance is high enough to, more or less, keep up with end-user demands, IT corporations can invest more time and effort into making their products safer and easier on the environment. Among them is Samsung, which has just revealed the existence of a 2TB hard drive that is as eco-friendly as it is capable. Being RoHS compliant and offering a quiet operating environment, the EcoGreen F3EG 1.5TB and 2TB drives have power consumptions, compared with competing solutions, 40% and 10% lower in idle and reading/writing modes, respectively.

The EcoGreen F3 uses the SATA 3.0 Gbps interface and boasts the Native Command Queuing technology. The product's buffer memory is of 16MB/32MB and the implementation of SilentSeek and NoiseGuard allow it to run in silence. In addition, the device's PCBA is built with zero halogen compounds and brominated flame retardants, thus meeting all the environmental regulations, including the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS). This construction without hazardous materials is made possible by the company's EcoTriangle technology.

“Storage-hungry multimedia professionals, gamers and home PC users continue to increase the amount of video, music, photo and other personal data they store and back-up,” In Cheol Park, vice president, Storage Sales, Samsung Electronics, said. “The F3EG delivers all the benefits of a low-power drive yet features high performance and is environmentally friendly.”

The 1.5TB and 2TB storage capacities are achieved thanks to disks of 500GB each. This increased storage density means the need for fewer drive components, enabling the aforementioned decrease in overall power consumption. This fact prompted IDEMA Japan (International Disk Drive Equipment and Materials Association) to name the EcoGreen series, for two years in a row, as the best-in-class in the area of power consumption.

The 3.5-inch drive is available in the United States and in the European Union at the MSRP of $179.99.
