The MHL standard is going forward whether others like it or not

Using your phone or tablet as a sort of remote control is possible on certain TVs, but not many, so Samsung figured it might as well launch a few more.

The MHL (mobile high-definition link) standard is quite young, but has several supporters already : Nokia, Samsung, Silicon Image, Sony and Toshiba.

Samsung has just revealed two displays equipped with the technology: S27B750V and S23B550V.

As their names imply, they have screen diagonal lengths of 27 and 23 inches, respectively. Fairly respectable sizes overall.

Oddly enough, even though Samsung has only just made the formal PR move, the S27B550V had been on sale even before the introduction, in the US.

The S23B550V is a newcomer though, and there is no stock available anywhere else, for either of them.

As is not at all surprising, the panels have Full HD support (native resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels) and built-in speakers (two 5W), plus audio outputs.

It is the display inputs that might take people by surprise. Not only is there a D-Sub present, but there are two HDMI ports as well, not just one.

Moving on, the static contrast ratio is 3,000:1 and the response time is a respectable 2ms GTG (grey-to-grey).

Truly, the size, brightness and the power consumption are the only differences to speak of. The 23-inch S23B550V uses 40W and has a 250 cd/m2 luminosity, while the 27-inch S27B550V consumes 50W and manages 300 cd/m2.

The MHL connection is established through one of the HDMI ports and there should be other panels with support for it down the line. No clue how the specs and prices will compare.

Speaking of which, the S27B550V hovers at $400 (309 Euro) and the S23B550V carries a price of $200 (155 Euro). Kind of a large difference for spec sheets so similar, although, true enough, the size difference isn't exactly small either.
