Samsung Electronics said on Monday that it has just developed the world's slimmest mobile phone.

Moreover, the new SGH-X820 model carries a built-in 2 megapixel camera and includes MP3 player functions. The phone will be showed at an information and technology communications fair this week in Russia, called Sviaz Expocomm 2006.

"The Samsung 'ultra-slim phone' has set a record in the mobile handset history by breaking the wall of 7-millimeter thickness for the first time in the world," the company said. The 6.9 millimeters thick handset will be a serious competitor to the Motorola SLVR, having a more traditional style keypad that uses separate keys while still maintaining a thin profile.

The device supports GPRS/EDGE and is compatible with 900MHz/1800MHz/1900MHz GSM networks. It makes use of a 1.9 inch, 176 x 220 pixel resolution display that is capable of 262k colors and can be viewed in landscape mode for some functions.

Other features include Bluetooth and USB support, a media player that supports MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, and WMA music files, 80MB of built-in storage, and a TV-out function for viewing photos and videos on TV.

Samsung expects the SGH-X820 to hit the Russian market in June of 2006, followed eventually by other European markets.
