The lower price of the A5 will surely make a difference

The Galaxy Alpha marks an important change in how Samsung usually builds its smartphone products. The Korean tech giant usually relied on plastic, as its main manufacturing material, a decision which was contested time and time again by fans and reviewers alike.

The Galaxy Alpha is important because it’s Samsung’s first handset to boast a metal frame. However, today we bring you some sad news concerning the smartphone.

According to a report coming from ET News, even if the handset has barely made it out on the market (it was released on September 2014), the Korean tech giant already has plans of discontinuing it.

RIP, the Galaxy Alpha

The Galaxy Alpha is a capable smartphone, taking advantage of capable specs and a lot of premium features (heart rate sensor, fingerprint scanner), but one of the negative points we even highlighted in our review was the high price.

Samsung appears to know customers are staying away from the Alpha because it’s an expensive piece of gadgetry, therefore it has come up with a solution to try and fix things.

So, in the next few months Sammy will slowly start replacing the Galaxy Alpha with the Galaxy A5 handset. The device is scheduled to launch in South Korean late next month or in early February.

We already talked about the A line a while ago, when Samsung officially introduced the A3 and A5. Compared to the Galaxy Alpha, the A5 boasts an all-metal frame, but most importantly it is a lot cheaper.

Samsung Galaxy A5 spec round-up

The A5 arrives with a Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with 720p. On the inside, 64-bit 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor fitted with Adreno 306 graphics and 2GB of RAM keeps everything alive.

There’s also a 13MP camera on the back with autofocus, LED flash and full HD (1080p) video recording, as well as a 5MP shooter up in front.

The move isn't too surprising given the fact that the low-end to middle-range smartphone market is getting all the attention these days. On the other hand, Samsung has already announced its plans to cut the numbers of smartphone models by up to 30% in order to combat falling profits.
