Wireless carrier Sprint is getting ready for the launch of its second 4G-capable smartphone, the Samsung Epic 4G, which should land on its airwaves on August 31, and which is already a highly popular smartphone. Starting with August 13, the device was available for pre-order, but it seems that all available units were sold out, and that those interested in purchasing it should wait for the end of the month to make an acquisition.

Packing a touchscreen display complemented by a sliding QWERTY keyboard and the said 4G connectivity, the Samsung Epic 4G was bound to become one of the most popular smartphones at Sprint, that's for sure.

“With its beautiful display and slide-out keyboard, Samsung Epic 4G is a powerful tool for our customers, and it extends Sprint’s 4G leadership with a second strong smartphone option,” said Sprint CEO Dan Hesse.

The wireless carrier already launched a 4G-capable smartphone, the HTC EVO 4G, which managed to break sales records at the carrier during the first few days of availability.

Samsung Epic 4G, a Samsung Galaxy S smartphone, runs under Google's Android 2.1 operating system, and is set to deliver an enhanced experience to users through offering faster data speeds and boasting a better touchscreen display.

The specifications list of the device includes a Samsung 1GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird processor, 4-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen, or a 5-megapixel photo snapper with HD (720p) video recording, auto focus, and power LED flash.

Additionally, the device comes with Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth capabilities, a 1500 mAh removable battery, access to a wide range of applications via the Android Market, and more. Sprint also plans on upgrading the device to Android 2.2 in the coming months.

The handset should land on August 31 with a price tag of $249.99 upon the signing of a two-year contract agreement and after a $100 mail-in rebate (taxes excluded). Users can register for updates on its availability here.
