It seems that Samsung is quite eager to contribute to the evolution of the display industry by opening up new design possibilities, perhaps even new device types, through such projects as flexible displays, the latest of which being apparently invented with smartphones in mind.

The idea of flexible displays, while hard to actually implement, is not exactly a new one.

In fact, IT players have been researching them for some time, leading to such things as HP's flexible display sheet.

Now, Samsung has revealed a new panel, based on the AMOLED display technology, which measures 4.5 inches in diagonal.

This panel seems to have a noteworthy durability, as it can be safely folded to a radius of 1 cm and still recover to its original form without negative consequences.

The demonstration was made at the FPD International expo and it was more or less clear that the panel was superior to the one introduced just a short while ago.

Said display was also an AMOLED panel and has a diagonal of six inches, while its thickness was of only 0.1 mm.

Still, the folding radius was a fair bit larger than what Samsung accomplished, being of a minimum 5 cm.

As for what the screen could do when it came to displaying images, the new 4.5-inch panel apparently managed a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. This is the same resolution that the latest smartphones have.

Moving forward, both parties that developed flexible screens will try to use a fabrication process that avoids using glass as a substrate layer.

It is unclear when the new display panels will actually reach the market, or if they even will do so in the near future.

All in all, it may seem that the coming of foldable watches and ultra-thin mobile electronics is getting closer and closer.
