Samsung, one of the world's leading vendors of consumer electronics and a major player in the market for personal computer systems, has announced today the launch of its first internal Blu-ray disc Combo unit, the SH-B083. Designed to provide a choice for computer users looking to upgrade their systems with the latest in the optical drive market, the new Blu-ray drive is said to deliver read speeds of up to 8x, for BD-R and BR-ROMs, while also being capable of reading CDs at up to 40x and DVDs at up to 16x.

“Expanding the HD content experience for PC users, Blu-ray technology offers consumers a lot of advantages over traditional ODD technology,” said John Suh, director of OMS sales and marketing. “With Samsung’s new BD drive, users can not only watch HD movies on their PC but they can also record HDTV broadcasting on to a DVD with the bundled software Cyberlink Powerproducer. They also can record HD camcorder movies to a DVD disc with Powerproducer.”

Samsung is one of the ODD market leaders, with an experience that it has put to good use with the new SH-B083 Combo drive unit. According to the company, the new drive features an average access speed of 350ms, which is much faster than any other drive that is available on the market. For improved performance and a more stable reading, the new Samsung Blu-ray Combo drive unit has been equipped with two lenses, one designed for BD read, while the other is for CD/DVD read/write.

To sweeten the offer, Samsung has included the Cyberlink BD advisor, which is available on the bundled disc and can be used to determine whether PCs are ready for BD. The offer also includes the Cyberlink TruTheater software. Unfortunately, the company hasn't announced the pricing details of the new drive, which is expected to become available sometime in November.
