Following Toshiba's hard-drive initiative to provide users with more storage space in a low, 2.5-inch form factor, Samsung has recently announced that it also plans to expand its line of portable hard drives with the introduction of a new, 640GB model. The new drive should provide users with a portable storage solution that can accommodate approximately 640GB of digital data and also offer a number of security features, designed to protect their personal files. According to Samsung, the new drives should be available in both 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch form factors, offering a choice to those that require additional storage for their personal computer systems.

“As consumer demands continue to escalate for storing personal data, music and video files, Samsung has expanded its extensive family of external hard drives to support the growing personal storage market,” Cheol-hee Lee, vice president of marketing, Storage Systems Division, Samsung Electronics, said. “The new drives provide users with a sleek design and high-density choices in both 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch form factors.”

The 640GB model will be part of the company's line of S2 Portable series, coming in a 2.5-inch form factor and boasting a traditional USB 2.0 interface. Additional features of the new drive include a Power Saving Mode, auto-backup and a SecretZone, a feature that will enable users to store their files in a virtual drive that comes with support for AES-128bit or AES-256bit encryption.

In addition, Samsung plans to expand its line of external drives with the introduction of a new S3 Station that will provide users with a 3.5-inch hard drive boasting an impressive 2TB of storage space. The said model is scheduled to arrive early next year.

Unfortunately, the company hasn't revealed any specific details regarding the prices of the new S2 and S3 drives.
