On Sunday, Samsung, one of the world's leading manufacturers of consumer electronics, has showcased an ultra-high definition 82-inch liquid crystal display panel. Rated for the 120Hz television sets, the enormous LCD display has been presented at the Society for Information Display (SID) 2008 International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition. Among the rest of the participants, LG is worth noting, as also being one of the biggest names in consumer electronics.

The revealing of this new product has most certainly caught the attention of participants at the leading North American show for electronic-displays in Los Angeles. Samsung claims its new 82-inch LCD panel to be a world's first as far as size and technology go. Regarding technology, Samsung has also equipped its new product with a light-emitting diode (LED) backligtht, which will most certainly increase its popularity among users worldwide. But the use of this technology will also take any TV set featuring this 82-inch giant at a price tag higher than what most can afford.

Kim Sang-soo, executive vice president of Samsung's LCD Technology Center said that: "I personally hope the next-generation ultra-high definition level in the LCD panel market will open soon, with increasing consumer demand for clear viewing in households and public spaces". The comment comes to clarify which are the targeted market areas for Samsung's ultra-high definition monster. With 82-inch in size, the LCD screen will most certainly not fit your normal flat, so a few special requirements would have to be met.

Along with the showing of this 82-inch LCD panel designed for TV sets, Samsung also showcased an 82-inch LCD e-Board using ultra-high definition technology. The SID show has also prompted LG Display to exhibit an LCD roll-printing technology to replace the photolithography process used in LCD fabrication. The new technology is said to be environmentally friendly, reducing the amount of chemicals required by the photolithography process.

Samsung has also announced at the show its intentions of releasing a 3.0-inch WVGA AM OLED panel, for use as an e-business card, and a 2-inch QVGA AM OLED panel for an e-passport.
