Now that it finished unveiling new tablets or whatnot, Toshiba is again looking to other market segments, and its line of storage devices has finally seen the addition of a new collection of portable HDDs.

Those that have been keeping track of the happenings at the MWC 2011 expo will know of how Toshiba revealed such things as the Satellite R800 laptops and a Tegra 2 tablet.

Now, the same company, or at least its European division, has issued a press release in which it unveils the STOR.E ART 4 HDDs.

Basically, it is a new series of portable hard disk drives that come in multiple sizes and capacities, albeit the same connectivity technology.

To be more specific, they all use the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface standard, which has a theoretical maximum transfer speed of 5 Gbps (though HDDs can't really use it at its best, not yet at least).

“USB 3.0 will become a standard feature in the computing market of the future. Toshiba anticipated this trend, and launches not only new hard disk drives but also notebooks featuring the SuperSpeed data transmission technology,” said Marco Perino, general manager, Digital Products EMEA Toshiba Computer Systems.

The STORE.E ART 4 line has a 500GB member (154 grams, 118.9 x 79 x 13.5 mm), a 750 GB one and a 1 TB one (both of 186 grams and 118.9 x 79 x 16.5mm).

They also have red graphical accents, blue trims and a white theme, respectively, and feature the added benefit of encryption.

To be more specific, the newcomers boast 256-bit data encryption, plus the NTI BackupNow EZ software.

“NTI BackupNow EZ software provides fully-customisable backup capabilities, including the option to backup specific folders, certain file types, and to conduct a system backup,” adds the press release.

They haven't been priced yet, but shipments should begin, in Africa, Middle East and Europe, by the end of Q1 2011.
