In what was certainly one of the most surprising announcements during the Spike TV Video Game Awards, EA Sports has revealed a brand new title in its long-running SSX snowboarding franchise, entitled SSX: Deadly Descents.

The trailer video is pretty impressive, and shows a darker tone than previous SSX games, with snowboarders engaged in fierce competitions on the most dangerous mountains around the world.

EA was quick to update its Store description for the new game, and the details sound quite impressive.

"Players will explore the story of a team who seek to be the first to descend the faces of the most treacherous mountain ranges on the planet," explains EA.

"The team will travel the world to face the worst that Mother Nature can throw at them. From the peaks of the Himalayas, where the air is so thin that riders have to descend through the death zone at breakneck speeds to keep from blacking out, to the solid ice ranges of Antarctica, where a sunlit line is the only survival option when temperatures drop 50 degrees centigrade in the shade."

Don't go thinking you'll just have to worry about the dangerous mountains, as players will also need to face traps laid out by rival teams and compete with them to reach the bottom of the courses.

EA completes the intriguing description by saying that the main objective is to survive, while the second is to do it in style.

No release date was offered by the company, but expect the game to appear sometime next year, probably right before the holiday season in order to attract those that can't go snowboarding outside.

This is the first new SSX game since the Wii-exclusive SSX Blur, which was revealed back in 2007, while the previous, full-pledged title was SSX On Tour, released for last generation consoles like the PlayStation 2, Xbox or Nintendo GameCube.
