As some of you might remember, Synology announced yesterday a couple of new NAS units for the enterprise and office segments, but it seems that the company has some more surprises in store, as they've also revealed their offerings targeting the SOHO segment and home users, namely the DS211j and the DS411j DiskStation models. The Synology DS411j functions as a 24x7 BitTorrent, FTP, HTTP, eMule, and NZB download center without a PC, and supports music, Internet radio stations, and iPod playback with the optional speakers. The device can be equipped with 4 x 3.5 or 2.5 SATA(II) HDDs with a capacity of 2TB each, for a grand total of 8TB. The DS211j provides roughly the same set of features, the biggest difference between the two being the amount of storage they provide, since, unlike the DS411j, the DS211j only relies on 2 x 3.5 or 2.5-inch SATA(II) HDDs, with a maximum supported capacity of 4TB. Similar to most other DiskStations out there, the new models offer the same intuitive interface for easy configuration and management, reliable scheduled backups with set-it-and-forget-it simplicity, and simple file sharing. In addition to the expected NAS duties such as file sharing, RAID redundancy, and remote access, the DiskStation Manager (DSM 3.0) software platform these NAS solutions come pre-loaded with offers numerous multimedia services, such as Photo Station 4, that allows users to quickly and easily share photos and videos across the Internet, and a DLNA/UPnP compliant media server that makes it easy to stream photos, videos, and music to media players on their network, such as the Playstation 3 or Xbox. Additional value is found in Surveillance Station 5, allowing users to quickly turn their NAS into a network video recorder (NVR). With support for over 700 IP camera models, users can quickly create a surveillance system for home use, such as use as a nanny-cam or a video baby monitor. But that's not all since, in order to further enhance the remote features of the new DiskStations, Synology has released apps for Android and iPhone platforms, including DS photo+ , that lets users view and upload photos wherever they are, DS audio, that lets users access terabytes of music on the go and DS cam, that lets users view and control their surveillance network from anywhere. "This newest line has Synology showing its continued commitment to bring personal users the same powerful features demanded by business users," said Joshua Wise, senior product specialist at Synology America. "This is absolutely an economical way to combine backups and media sharing in one package," concluded Mr. Wise, without providing any pricing information, unfortunately.
