The SME Server development team has released not one but two testing versions of upcoming releases, SME Server 7.5 RC1 and SME Server 8.0 Beta 5. The release candidate version, SME Server 7.5 RC1, is mostly a bug-fixing build, while SME Server 8.0 Beta 5 also comes with a couple of bigger changes.

"The SME Server development team is pleased to announce the release of SME Server 8.0beta5 which is based on CentOS 5.4 and will be the next major release of SME Server," SME Server developer Ian Wells wrote in the official announcement.

Highlights of SME Server 8.0 Beta 5:

· Based on CentOS 5.4. · Samba 3.4.3: has been updated from sources provided by ClearOS. This version of Samba provides support for Windows 7 domain logins. · PHP 5.2.10 is provided by the Red Hat Application Stack 2. It is needed by recent web applications such as OScommerce. · LDAP authentication: third-party applications can authenticate against SME Users passwords. LDAP is still read-only, built automatically from SME databases.

"The SME Server development team is pleased to announce the release of SME Server 7.5RC1. This release is based on CentOS 4.8," the official announcement for SME Server 7.5 RC1 read. This release comes with a lot of bug fixes, but no new features or packages. It's based on the older CentOS core and is intended as an upgrade for users of SME Server 7.4, or older, who aren't ready or able to make the jump to the newer SME Server 8.0.

About SME Server

SME stands for small to medium enterprise, which betrays its intended purpose. It has been a pretty popular option in this market since the distribution was launched in 1999, then under the name e-smith. Since then, it has gained a reputation as a reliable and easy- to-use distribution especially for small businesses looking to host an email server or similar purposes.
