System Information for Windows is not a notorious application, but use its abbreviation, SIW, and you’ve got everybody knowing what you are talking about. For those still in the dark, SIW is a pretty popular application that gathers details about your system; info on the software installed and hardware present on the system is presented in detail.

The current version that has been released today sports few changes, including minor enhancements and compatibility fixes. Bringing up to date the database with the devices recognized by SIW is also on the list of modifications, just like updating licenses for various apps (Adobe Acrobat 9, AutoCAD 2010, Camtasia Studio, Corel VideoStudio 12, etc.).

One important aspect that needs to be mentioned for this release is the fact that the developer dropped ad-support and now offers a clean, ad-free application. Previous versions of SIW offered to install Crawler toolbar which was not required for the application to function properly; default search engine would also be changed.

Soft core of SIW comprises details on the operating system used, updates, running processes, file associations, system security settings, drivers, license keys for the operating system, list of installed applications, etc.. A very interesting feature of the application is its ability to retrieve passwords stored in Firefox and Internet Explorer.

Hard core part of the program completes the main purpose of the application as it offers detailed reports on hardware components available to the system. Motherboard, RAM, CPU, storage device, network adapters and system slots are the object of this module.

SIW is free of charge for personal use and does not require installation. It can be used portably straight from a regular USB drive, or it can be installed on U3 smart drives so that you can have it in the launchpad. Either way, the program can be carried around and used on any computer you plug your USB key into. The most popular Windows flavors are supported (7 and XP) as well as older editions (2000, ME, 98) and server platforms: Windows Server 2008 (R2), Server 2003 (R2), Server 2000.
