Shortly after porting the “Sonic CD” game on the Android and iOS platforms, SEGA announced that the next title in the series will be available only on certain Android devices.

According to SEGA, “Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 2” will be launched sometime this year, but it will only work on Android devices equipped with Nvidia Tegra 2 and Tegra 3 chipsets.

However, the game will be initially launched on Nvidia Tegra 2 devices, but the developer confirmed that it would work closely with NVIDIA to release an enhanced version of the game aimed at Tegra 3 devices.

Although Asus already launched the first Android device to feature an Nvidia Tegra 3 chipset that includes a 1.3 GHz quad-core CPU and a ULP GeForce graphics processing unit, no other handset maker confirmed plans to release such a device.

Rumor has it that HTC will also release a quad-core tablet with the codename HTC Quattro, but for the time being there are no official details available.

Anyway, until SEGA releases the Tegra 3 version of the game, fans of the old-school game will be able to play “Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 2” on the Android devices equipped with Tegra 2 chipsets.

After twenty years in action, it’s clear that Sonic hasn’t slowed down one bit. The first entry in the Sonic 4 saga was a major success. We’ve listened to the fans and been hard at work making sure we recapture that same spirit of fun in Episode II. We hope the fans will enjoy it,” said Haruki Satomi, senior vice president of Digital Business at SEGA of America.

According to SEGA, the game will feature new character animation, as well as a new redesigned physics engine to reflect the advancement of mobile devices’ hardware. New areas in the story mode and new challenges will be included as well.

“Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 2” will be available for download in the Android Market and Tegra Zone sometime in 2012.
