The SD Association has announced the Ultra High Speed (UHS) Class 3 specification

It was only a matter of time before this happened. In fact, one might say the only surprise here is that it took the SD Association so long to implement support for 4K2K video on memory cards.

Indeed, that's what happened. The SD Association has introduced a new Ultra High Speed (UHS) Speed Class 3 (U3) trademark, of sorts. More like a symbol really.

The symbol will be placed on SDXC UHS-I and UHS-II, plus SDHC UHS-I and UHS-II, memory cards and devices that can handle 4K2K television and video products.

Which is to say, it will indicate the NAND Flash storage cards that can play video in 4K quality (usually 3840 x 2160 pixels resolution).

UHS Speed Class symbols, such as U1 and U3, indicate high write speeds for real-time video recording (minimum 10 MB/s and 30 MB/s), but the read speed is more important here (up to 312 MB/s).
