P.J. Snavely - High Velocity Bowling to make good use of the SIXAXIS

Whenever news editors need something on which to put the blame for the PS3's bad rep, the lack of titles always comes in handy. And it's a true topic nonetheless. You see, not only is the PS3 quite expensive, but there's no good reason to buy it anyway, as it doesn't sport that many titles to begin with. However, Sony's starting to take the blame and even promises a bright future for PS3 gamers:

"We fully realize that past success is no guarantee of future success," says SCEA president and CEO Jack Tretton, in a blog entry, as 1up reports, "but it does give you some perspective." He goes on speaking about how the PS3 needs to "showcase" what it can do, and how the company must prove the console's value and justify the gamers' investment.

Here's the part with the games: "At the end of the day," says Tretton, "it's always been about the games. To push the boundaries of gaming beyond where they currently lie takes a great deal of risk. I think all the hardware manufacturers are doing that in some way. We could have easily produced PlayStation 2.5 at a slightly increased price over the older model, and driven some nice profits and marginal innovation for a few years but that's not how we got where we are today. You have to gamble and make major investments in the present that will pay dividends in the future."

He also reminds gamers that there are currently 15 PS3 games coming from internal studios by the end of the year and some 100 or more coming from third-party developers.

On the same PlayStation Blog however, there is even further good news. SCEA San Diego senior producer P.J. Snavely also made an entry concerning his current project: High Velocity Bowling. Here's how the SIXAXIS might just get something worth mentioning on the primitive motion sensitivity capabilities it has:

"We came up with the idea of using the SIXAXIS controller for bowling on August 23rd, 2006 - I know the exact date because it was my birthday...Eddy Cramm (who is a Sr. Designer on MLB '07) and I had taken the day off to get a couple rounds of golf in, a rare luxury these days. Out on the course, we talked about using the controller as a bowling interface (we both carry 200+ averages in our current bowling league) and both loved the idea. He sent a text message to our studio director that night and my team (small, but dedicated) started work on it the next day. While we weren't surprised by the inclusion of bowling in Wii Sports a month later, we knew that we were taking it a step further once that game launched."

Can't wait to see it, even though there are just 6 directions of motion that gamers can input with the SIXAXIS. Wait a minute. I'm just realizing that Tretton said something about 100 third party titles by the end of the year... Let's hope those don't include downloadable small stuff over PS Network.
