The year of Lupita has begun! The young actress got her first big role in the Brad Pitt-produced “12 Years a Slave,” which landed her her first nomination at the Screen Actors Guild and, as you can see in the video above, her first win as well.

At the 2014 edition that took place over the weekend, Lupita Nyong’o beat fan favorite Jennifer Lawrence and veterans Julia Roberts, June Squibb, and Oprah Winfrey – and she was absolutely overwhelmed by the honor done to her.

Still, for her first major awards show, she did brilliantly. Lupita managed to thank everyone who had helped her land the role of Pasty in the critically acclaimed film, from the producers to her co-stars, friends, and family, and even finished off with a joke.

Even though it was Jennifer Lawrence who won Best Supporting Actress at the Golden Globes 2014 last week, this Actor statuette puts Lupita ahead in the Oscars race, some industry analysts believe. The awards gala will take place on March 2.
