Hours after the 2011 Golden Globes – and quite out of the blue as well –, Nicole Kidman and husband Keith Urban announced they had welcomed their second daughter together into the family, via a surrogate mother.

As we also noted back then, the news came as a shock since, while on the red carpet at the Globes neither Nicole nor Keith even mentioned the little bundle of joy – whom they named Faith Margaret – they had waiting for them at home.

Last night, at the 2011 Screen Actors Guild Awards, Nicole offered an explanation for the secrecy: they were just trying to protect their child and the woman who helped them deliver her to this world, People magazine reports.

Still, even after deciding it would be best to keep the whole thing a secret until they were ready to make the announcement, Nicole says it was one of the hardest things she ever did in her life.

“I wanted to be able to tell everybody because I was so excited about her,” the actress told Giuliana Rancic on the red carpet.

“We just decided this was our thing together. It kind of just perpetuated itself. [And] it protects her, and it protects everyone in the situation,” Nicole further said of the whole secrecy.

Faith Margaret was born at The Women’s Hospital at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville, by a gestational carrier. She joins her older sister Sunday Rose, who is 2.

As for the name, Nicole revealed on the same occasion it was a tribute of sorts to her own grandmother.

“It’s that southern double name,” she says. Margaret is her grandmother. “[She] had her last baby at 49. She’s my inspiration,” Nicole added.

For the SAG Awards 2011, Nicole Kidman wore a black lace Nina Ricci gown, of which she said she’d chosen because she loved bows, with jewelry by Fred Leighton, Manolo Blahnik shoes and a Prada clutch.
