South Korea’s cyber security has taken center stage in the media since around 32,000 computers owned by financial institutions and broadcasters have been disrupted by pieces of malware.

According to the Yonhap News Agency, following the incident, the South Korean government has decided to create a position for a cyber security secretary at the presidential office.

The new secretary would directly report to the Blue House’s National Security Office.

Currently, several agencies – including the military cyber command, the police, the National Intelligence Service and the Korea Communications Service – are responsible for countering cyberattacks.

Officials from the ruling party, the Saenuri Party, highlight that the current structure makes it difficult to efficiently and rapidly respond to attacks.

In the meantime, new details have emerged regarding the latest cyberattack. However, while North Korea remains the main suspect, no culprits have been singled out.

Initially, a Chinese IP address was detected, but experts later determined that it was actually an internal IP utilized by one of the affected banks.
