Warner Bros. is currently working on bringing yet another loved superhero to life on the big screen, Green Lantern from DC Comics. The competition for the part was tight but, in the end, it came down to three candidates: Ryan Reynolds, Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto. Reynolds has just been chosen for the coveted part and is currently in talks with producers, as Variety confirms.

“Ryan Reynolds has landed the coveted role of ‘Green Lantern,’ getting the starring role in Warner Bros.’ live-action film based on the DC Comics hero. Martin Campbell will direct. Production is expected to begin in January. Warners and Campbell chose Reynolds, who vied for the superhero role along with ‘The Hangover’ star Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto. The momentum built for Reynolds in the last week, as he was the only actor whose option was extended. Greg Berlanti wrote the script with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green. Donald DeLine will produce with Berlanti.” Variety says.

Another male star said to be considered for the upcoming superhero film was singer turned actor Justin Timberlake who, granted he had gotten the part, would have thus broken into mainstream. Nevertheless, while no official comment has been made on choosing Reynolds, it is believed he was a favorite ever since casting began mostly because of his part as Deadpool in the “X-Men” spinoff released this year, “Wolverine.”

Speaking of which, just a couple of days ago, Reynolds confirmed for the media that 20th Century Fox was still working on a spinoff of “Wolverine,” one that would tell the story of Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, as announced off the record even before the release of “Wolverine.” Although the actor could not offer specifics on the state of the project, he did say that the focus was on not disappointing fans and on coming up with a character that they would love, much like they did with the comics.

“Break the fourth wall? Oh yeah, he [Deadpool] has got to. I want to see him break the Great Wall. The studio’s working on a script and trying to find a director. The main goal is to make sure it stays close to the source material. I’m one of [the fans]. I’ve always been a fan, at least for the last eight or nine years. I feel a bit of validation because I knew going into Wolverine that there’s a huge fanbase for this and I don’t think anyone else did.” Reynolds was saying just a few days ago.
