The websites of several major Russian financial institutions have been disrupted earlier this month with distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attacks.

The list of targets includes Russia’s central bank, VTB, Alfa Bank, and Sberbank. Experts believe this is an attempt to undermine trust in the banking sector, Total Telecom informs, citing a report from news agency Interfax.

In a statement made to the press on Wednesday, Artyom Sychyov, the deputy head of the central bank’s cyber security department, noted that the latest attack on his organization was very well organized, despite not being very powerful.

Russia’s main bank has filed a complaint with authorities regarding the DDOS attacks.

DDOS attacks are problematic not only for the Russian financial sector. Until recently, hackers supposedly working for Iran have been constantly disrupting the systems of United States banks by launching similar cyberattacks against them.
