Yes, you can

In case you haven't heard, you can run the iPhone SDK version 2.2.1 on a PowerPC Mac, if you so much as replace a few code lines with the appropriate ones. Better yet, Apokalypse Software suggests you download its automated solution that makes the iPhone SDK compatible with PPC Macs running Leopard.

According to Apocalypse Software Corp., the maker of several Mac OS X utility apps, this is how you can install the iPhone SDK for 2.2.1 on a machine running at least Mac OS X 10.5.5:

1. Ensure you have at least six gigs of disk space available. If you have tried to install the iPhone SDK on the target volume before, it may state an upgrade will be performed instead of an install. Unfortunately, the only solution currently available for this situation is to uninstall Xcode using /Library/Developer/3.1/uninstall-devtools.

2. Download the SDK disk image.

3. Mount the image by double-clicking it.

4. Copy the mounted volume to a hard drive.

5. Navigate to iPhone SDK.mpkg/Contents/iPhoneSDK.dist in the copied folder and replace line 340 with a different one (code lines available at the Apocalypse Software Corp. blog).

6. Run the installer, selecting either the default location /Developer or another directory name if you’re looking to preserve your current Xcode installation.

7. After a successful installation, navigate from the installation directory (default of /Developer) to /Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/Library/Xcode/Specifications/iPhone Simulator Architectures.xcspec, where you will have to make two more code changes.

Luckily (for the code-fobic), there's a faster and much easier way to get a PPC Mac to run Apple's iPhone SDK version 2.2.1. Apocalypse Software has put together iPhoneSDKonqueror, a program that handles all these steps for you. The app costs a mere five bucks!

“Apokalypse Software Corp. has leveraged over 25 years of software development research and development to produce innovations in techniques and tools,” the company says on its website. “Our processes prepare teams to develop software in a timely fashion, anticipate difficulties and facilitate the reuse of components for future endeavors.”

“In the coming year, as these products are introduced to the market, Apokalypse Software Corp. will lead the industry in providing superior solutions to other organizations, which depend on software to seize or maintain the leadership position in their field,” the developer adds.
