The much-awaited Final Fantasy Versus XIII action role-playing game from publisher Square Enix has been canceled after spending more than six years in development, according to a number of sources that have spoken to Kotaku.

The website has revealed that it has talked to several sources inside Square Enix and the team dealing with the game, with one of them saying that the decision has only been made in the last few weeks, after a number of executives have evaluated the state of Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

Apparently, Square Enix will not make an official announcement about the cancelation because it is worried about the effect that it could have on the share price and players will simply get no more information about Final Fantasy Versus XIII as the development team moves on to another project.

The sources are also saying that all the assets and the technology created for the game are not part of the development process linked to Final Fantasy XV.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII was announced in 2006 and was supposed to arrive alongside the core Final Fantasy XIII game, part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis world.

The first and last footage taken from the game was shown in 2010 and since then Square Enix has released very limited information about it.

Tetusya Nomura, who is leading the development process, stated earlier during the year that he has plans to create a new real-time demo for the game that was supposed to arrive in time for E3 2012.

During March, he revealed that a set of circumstances made the new demo impossible to create.

Squre Enix has already revealed that it plans to make a number of announcements related to Final Fantasy on September 1, when the franchise is 25 years old, but has not unveiled whether it will be talking about new games or more expansion.
