Social aspect

It seems that Nintendo is getting ready to launch a DSi Speak voice channel, allowing those who have picked up the newest version of the handheld to communicate directly with one another making good use of the built-in microphone. The company is saying that reports pointing to an upcoming DSi Speak are just rumors and that there are no plans for a release in the coming months, but the evidence seems pretty strong in favor of DSi Speak actually existing.

A paragraph on the official customer support side read, “To redeem a Nintendo DSi Download Ticket number, such as for the Nintendo DSi Speak Channel, enter the number off the Nintendo DSi Download Ticket in 'Settings and Features' off of the main Nintendo DSi Shop page, then select 'Nintendo DSi Download Ticket.” Of course, it could just be a mistake made when the page was created, but Nintendo is usually too scrupulous to allow such tell-tale signs to just pop up on an official site.

Nintendo officially said that DSi Speak was “rumour as nothing has been announced” and also edited the page in question to take out all references to the new program. Still, the fact that the support page talked about the DSi Speak channel probably means that the Japanese company is getting ready to unveil the new service in the coming weeks, probably before Christmas, in an effort to attract more potential customers to the Nintendo DSi handheld.

If DSi Speak is real, then it will probably be fairly limited, as all tools from Nintendo that target social interaction are in order to prevent abuses. Still, it could be a great way to communicate for players that are taking part in multiplayer gaming on the Nintendo DSi and it would allow for the device to be more social than until now.
