There's no reason in the world why Sony would do this, but here it goes...

This has got to be the most exaggerated rumor we've heard in a very long time. This week, the Xbox 360 was rumored to launch as a cheaper bundle, which has been recently confirmed. Then the 40GB PS3 rumor was also confirmed. Now another PS3 rumor...? Come on, Sony has had enough headaches with all its PS3 models and especially the 80GB SKU, so why on Earth would they launch an even more beefed-up system which, by looking at the specs listed below, would go for double the 40GB SKU's price?

Here's what we've stumbled upon when browsing through a piece up on ps3news.com: "Thanks to one of our reliable insiders, [-JuNka-], we have news that Sony is planning to introduce a beefed up 160GB Playstation 3 console."

Then the website gives the specs below, mentioning that the "post was left by a member on the Pro Evolution Soccer forums:"

"From inside Sony Computer Entertainment International's Japan offices I present to you leaked information on the new 160gb Playstation 3 model that will be appearing in the near future

Sony PlayStation 3 Code: CECHG06 (SPECIFICATION)

* 160gb 2.5 SATA 5400rpm HDD * CELL Broadband Engine (65nm process) @ 3.2ghz * PPU x1, SPE x8 * RSX GPU (65nm process) @ 550mhz * Blu-Ray Optical Disc Drive @ 2x * Memory Card Reader- Memory Stick Duo, Compact Flash, Secure * Digital * 6x USB 2.0 ports * 2x HDMI 1.3 ports * 3x Gigabit ethernet ports * DUALSHOCK 3 controller

'At the moment the unit is only confirmed for release in Japan. A date has not been fully specified but is expected after November'."

Right...! Had this list of specs just featured the DualShock3 and the 160GB HDD, it would have sounded like your regular hardware rumor, but 6x USB 2.0 ports, 3x Gigabit ethernet ports...? What is this, some kind of contest for who throws in the most features for the PS3, without losing credibility? We have to admit, none of the above specs seem impossible to implement, but it makes absolutely no sense as to why Sony would do such a thing. Who wants to go back to the "overpricing" issues that have surrounded the PS3 for so long?

Still, we can't totally dismiss the rumor either. Who knows, maybe Sony has managed to reduce the manufacturing costs even more, allowing future 80GB PS3 owners to choose this beffed-up system instead. But 6x USB 2.0 ports...?
