Looks like 'September all over again'

Only a rumor for now, but a highly possible scenario nonetheless. 9to5Mac's sources indicate that the iPhone and iPod touch are to see a $100 price drop within the next two months, with the lower end models being discontinued. The move is quite reminiscent to the fast one they pulled back in September 2007, when, out of the blue, Apple had knocked off as much as $200 on its newly introduced iPhone, causing outrage among early adopters.

Sill, Apple did compensate by offering a $100 credit bonus to those who had initially bought the iPhone back then. That doesn't necessarily mean customers actually felt much better - think of all those who blew off their entire savings to get one the day it was released.

The move is of course in light of Apple's introducing new iPhone and iPod touch models, sporting twice the storage capacity each.

"We just got a tip that Apple is planning on dropping the prices again on the iPhone and iPod line within the next month or two - perhaps at the late February event, perhaps as late as mid-April," says the post. "Our tipster says that Apple will drop the prices $100 on both the iPod Touch and iPhone lines."

The piece goes on revealing that not only are the two Apple devices likely to get the respective $100 price drop - which, by the way, makes a lot of sense - but also that the older 8GB iPod touch will be discontinued. Logically, the 8GB iPhone's outcome should be similar, yet the tipster made no such mentioning.

So, here's how the next two months are likely to shape up with:

scrapped 8GB iPhone - introduced 16GB iPhone at $399

scrapped 8GB iPod touch - introduced 16GB iPod touch at $299 - introduced 32GB iPod touch at $399

Further proof to back this rumor up comes from pretty much every technology-based source on the Internet that has had at least one featured title concerning the falling prices of flash memory, while Forbes.com is advising those who haven't purchased an iPhone yet to wait a little longer, as the 3G model is likely right around the corner as well.
