It looks like Chinese company ZTE plans to launch a rugged Android smartphone in the Mainland. The ZTE G610U device has been recently spotted at TENAA, the Chinese regulatory commission, which means that the smartphone is likely to go official within the next couple of weeks.

GSMArena reports that ZTE G610U will ship with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean operating system out of the box, which might not be that bad were it not for the kind of low internal specs.

Although ZTE G610U is aimed at Android users who are looking for a sturdy device that could serve them even in the harshest environments, I see no reason for ZTE not to include slightly better features onto a rugged smartphone.

Thus, the ZTE G610U has been confirmed to pack 1GB of RAM, which is more than enough considering that the smartphone is equipped with only a 1.3GHz dual-core processor.

On the back, the handset sports an average 5-megapixel photo snapper, which features autofocus, LED flash and video recording. In the front, there’s a secondary VGA camera that may be used for video calls among other things.

The G610U comes with a decent 4-inch capacitive touchscreen display that supports 480 x 800 pixel resolution. The phone is powered by a high-capacity 2000 mAh battery, which has yet to be rated by the manufacturer.

There’s no word on when exactly ZTE G610U will be released in China and for what price, but judging by the phone’s specs sheet, it should be positioned in the budget-friendly range.

Furthermore, little is known about the smartphone’s rugged features, but given the fact that it weighs around 156g (battery included), it should be sturdy enough to withstand harsh environments.

Also, there’s no telling whether ZTE will release the G610 rugged smartphone outside of China, but stay tuned for more updates on the matter.
