Rolling Stone magazine's marketing stunt of putting Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on their cover proved genius.

The issue with the Boston terrorist on the cover was so largely debated that it went flying off the shelves.

Sales increased on the single issue, amounting to double what they would have been this time last year. They reported a 102 percent increase from 2012 with 13,232 copies.

Ad Week writes that the “Boston Bomber” issue even prompted a “Boycott Rolling Stone” campaign on social media.

CVS and Stop & Stop refused to sell the magazine, but that didn't affect sales that much. Only 5 percent of Rolling Stone magazines are sold in retail locations.

The mag reported the same success with a 1970 cover of Charles Manson, which also won a National Magazine Award.
